Should We Marry Locally or Away From Home?

Having a Wedding Locally or in a Destination Away from Home

Where Will You Tie the Knot?

Planning a wedding can be overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. Whether you are just beginning to research the benefits of a destination wedding vs. a traditional, locally hosted wedding or have already decided to get married in a destination away from home, let us help make your big day unforgettable. Before you can focus on creating the memorable day of your dreams, you must decide whether to get married locally or host a destination wedding somewhere else. Below, we share some pros and cons of both options to help with your decision-making process.

Hosting a Traditional Local Wedding OR A Destination Wedding

Local Weddings

Local weddings offer greater convenience for the couple and their guests. Here are the main pros and cons of hosting a wedding locally:

  • Pro: Make sure to visit the venue in person for a thorough walkthrough to ensure it meets your needs, especially since this may not be possible with destination weddings. Choosing a convenient location can help with organizing details more effectively. Consider scheduling a second walkthrough or requesting a video tour to refresh your memory of the venue. This can make you feel more comfortable when deciding about décor and setup.
  • Pro: Your wedding can be as small and intimate or as large and welcoming as you desire. Local weddings make it easier for guests to attend, enabling you to have the exact size wedding you envision.
  • Pro: Organizing a local wedding provides better control and minimizes vendor miscommunication. Local vendors are often familiar with your venue and can offer valuable insights based on their experience from previous weddings.
  • Pro or Con (depending upon your vision for your wedding): Planning a local wedding can be as intimate or elaborate as your vision and budget allow. Typically, every venue and vendor charges separately, so you'll need to secure individual contracts for your venue, caterer, florist, baker, DJ, photographer, and any additional services you wish to include. The costs can add up quickly as you engage more vendors and suppliers. While local weddings can sometimes exceed the expenses of a destination wedding, they also often allow for a more extensive guest list since more people can attend without the need to travel.
  • Con: Selecting a wedding date is often affected by local weather patterns. For example, if you desire an outdoor wedding, choosing a winter date in northern regions such as the Pacific Northwest or New England may not be practical due to the cold and snowy conditions. You may need to adjust your date to ensure that the weather conditions align with your vision for the ceremony and location.

Destination Weddings

Destination weddings can be an exciting adventure; however, they often require limiting your guest list. While planning a destination wedding may involve considerable effort, it can also be gratifying. Here are some pros and cons when deciding whether to host a destination wedding.:

  • Pro:  Imagine crafting an unforgettable wedding in a unique or exotic location—so many beautiful places await your celebration! The possibilities to explore are genuinely endless!
  • Pro: From the moment you arrive, you and your guests will be enveloped in a vacation-like atmosphere, making your wedding experience truly unforgettable and joyful!
  • Pro: Invite only your closest friends and family to make your wedding truly special. This will create a warm, intimate atmosphere that allows you to celebrate your love surrounded by those who mean the most to you.
  • Pro or Con (Depending on your preference.): Destination weddings often embrace a more relaxed vibe than local celebrations, though this can differ by location and venue. When choosing your perfect spot, consider whether you prefer a casual or traditional setting, as this will influence your attire, décor, and menu choices!
  • Pro or Con (Depending on your vision for your wedding.): Planning a destination wedding can be an exciting adventure, and while it may require a thoughtful approach to your guest list for budget reasons, there's excellent news! Many stunning venues provide bundled services that include everything from flowers to music and catering; all wrapped up in one convenient package. Plus, some venues even offer complimentary weddings if you book a specific number of guest rooms! It's a fantastic way to create lasting memories without the stress.
  • Con: It's essential to consider that elderly family members may face significant challenges when traveling to your destination wedding, which could prevent them from sharing your special day.
  • Con: Planning a destination wedding from afar can sometimes result in details not aligning as you envisioned. However, with careful organization and communication with your wedding specialist, you can ensure a seamless and magical experience for you and your guests.
  • Con: As wonderful hosts, your role goes beyond the wedding day! Since many guests travel from afar, making them feel welcomed and entertained is essential. Share local activities and dining options to enhance their experience. You might also consider organizing a welcome reception or a delightful morning-after brunch to foster connections and create lasting memories with your guests.
  • Con: When selecting your wedding venue, it's essential to focus on the joy of the experience rather than gift expectations. At a destination wedding, guests may opt for smaller gifts or no gifts due to travel costs, but their presence truly reflects their love and support, which is the greatest gift of all!
